Considering the Mk. VII Volkswagen Golf’s aesthetics have yet to see any significant changes since it hit showroom floors in 2012, it seems now is the right time to come up with a refresher for the versatile hatchback.

When that sentiment is related to the Golf’s high performance variants however, it looks like more aggression should come into play for the GTI as well as the R model. Judging from the images sent to us by our spies, it appears VW is already working on an updated look for the Golf R. Spotted around the Austrian Alps doing testing, a Golf R in wagon guise had its whole front fascia covered in camo with the rest of the body exposed; Perhaps suggesting a minor refresher involving items such as a re-sculpted front bumper as well as revised tail lamps.

Looking at the rather large gaps on the front camo, we could expect larger air dams that would not only give the Golf R a more aggressive look, but introduce more cooling as well.

No word has been received as far as powerplant options will go, however the R may still retain its 300PS output if no new engine choices will come into play. The interior may receive minor touches like that of the exterior, perhaps a larger infotainment display or updated trim pieces will find themselves in the cabin.

We can expect the same minor changes found in this Golf R to trickle down the rest of the Golf lineup eventually.
