Spy video shows 2019 Suzuki Jimny going retro

Suzuki goes for a retro-inspired look for all-new Jimny

After nearly two decades, it looks like the third-generation Suzuki Jimny will be replaced by an all-new model.

A few months ago, we came upon what appeared to be the all-new Jimny being built and inspected at an undisclosed facility; presumably a Suzuki factory. Based on its design and appearance, the company apparently went for a more retro and rugged look for the new mini 4x4.

Now it seems like our suspicions have been confirmed.

Spotted recently by Japan-based YouTube channel 'K.M.', they were able to take pictures of a fleet of 2019 Jimnys parked behind a Suzuki factory. We're not exactly sure where this factory is located but our best guess is that it's the likely to be in Iwata City in Shizuoka Prefecture; that's where Suzuki manufactures the current Jimny.

Like the photos that we saw last December, the undisguised 4x4 retains a boxy profile as before. However, it gets a new pair of headlights, a clamshell hood and a more rakish windshield. It also appears to be bigger than before which could mean it will have better luggage and cabin space. As a final touch, the new Jimny will also keep the rear-mounted spare tire at the back.

According to our spy photographers in previous reports, the new 2019 Jimny will still be a body-on-frame 4x4 with a ladder frame chassis. No specific engines for the new Jimny have been mentioned although we suspect it will make use of DualJet engines for better emissions and power delivery.

Expect the all-new Jimny to make its world debut some time this year or the next.
