Ssangyong celebrates 60 years in the business


Has been associated with other brands like Mercedes-Benz and Daewoo

Ssangyong, which means 'double dragon', started out in 1954 making trucks, buses, and jeeps.

Today it still making 4x4 vehicles, including SUVs and MPVs in its lineup. Back then the company used technology sourced from Mercedes-Benz, but now the company creates and designs its own components in producing automobiles.


It was during the early 1990s that Ssangyong came up with the first generation of the Korando and Musso, which became the DNA of future SUVs like the Rexton that was released in 2001.

In 2004, Ssangyong merged with the Chinese company Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation and saw the release of the company’s 7-seat MPV called the Rodius. In 2011, Mahindra & Mahindra, India’s largest maker of automobiles, acquired them. Also in that same year, the company released their 3rd generation Korando that was designed by the Italian automotive designer, Giugiaro. The C-segment SUV featured a unibody construction, a departure from their body-on-frame design, and utilized a 2.0L diesel engine designed and built in-house.

In 2015, they plan to launch the SUV called X100, the company’s first entry into the B-segment crossover segment. It is being developed alongside Mahindra and will use new engine options that will feature 1.6L gasoline and diesel engines.

Ssangyong is seeing increased sales in Russia and China while Western Europe and the UK remain key markets. India, Africa, Central and South America and Eastern Europe are also areas where sales growth is expected.  In total, Ssangyong has over 1,000 outlets around the world in over 90 countries.
