Having a penchant for keeping all the special eds and rarities for the locals, Subaru and the folks from STI have now fettled with the CVT WRX to bring the WRX tS S4 to the Japanese market.
While this new WRX isn’t an STI model per-se, the ‘tS’ in its moniker means it has been fitted with parts from STI to improve overall performance and driving feel. The WRX tS S4 benefits from a host of suspension and chassis upgrades from the S207 special edition model released last year.
More specifically, upgrades included are a flexible front strut tower bar, improved suspension with adjustable damping, new suspension links at the rear as well as a flexible rear subframe support. STI have also improved the braking by adding a pair of Brembo four-pot calipers to the front axle.
The exterior of the WRX tS S4 distinguishes itself subtly, with the most prominent change being the 19-inch wheels. A black STI lip chin as well as cherry red pinstriping on the mesh grille also add contrast to the limited-run model. If those changes are too minute though, an option to go with the NBR Challenge Package is also available.
Commemorating Subaru’s class win at the 24 Hours of Nürburgring, the NBR Challenge Pack adds a rear spoiler, a rear bootlid emblem, and black 19-inch wheels replace the silver ones that come with the standard S4.
The interior finds itself home to a pair of highly bolstered Recaro seats and matching cherry red trim. The Eyesight 2 driver safety suite also comes standard as with most Japanese model Subarus. Should the NBR Challenge pack box be ticked, the steering wheel will be wrapped in suede with a silver stripe taped down to the middle of the wheel.
As far as the powertrain goes, the 2.0L Flat Four Turbo gets a new intake and exhaust system. The CVT transmission also gets a transmission cooler for good measure. The resulting modifications take the WRX tS S4 to figures of 296PS and 400nM of torque.
Orders for the WRX tS S4 begin on October 4, 2016 and will only go up to March 12, 2017.
