Subaru revises the WRX and WRX STI for 2018

More aggressive looks, revised suspension in store for 2018 WRX, WRX STI

While a brand new iteration of the WRX – and its STI-beefed variant – is still a long ways from production, Subaru have provided a refresh of the current crop of rally-bred sedans. The 2018 WRX and WRX STI is set to receive various changes to its exterior and some key performance parts.

For starters, both the WRX and the WRX STI receive a more aggressive front fascia. The larger air dams further give the sedan and edgier look, and with the front end’s new shape the upper grill has also been altered to match the lower half. Both models will also receive revised suspension for improved ride comfort and steering stability.

For the WRX, improvements to the manual gearbox have been made by way of new synchros that will allow for smoother shifting. The clutch has also been re-worked to accommodate this change. Its electric power steering also gets tweaked for better feel. For 2018, the WRX also gets a new performance package that consists of Recaro eight-way power seats, red painted brake calipers, redesigned 18-inch wheels, and new brake pads from Jurid. The performance package also does away with the sunroof in the interest of weight.

The STI gets far more than improved suspension and looks however, as the 2018 model will receive a fully electric control over the Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD). Subaru says that this change will supposedly provide a “smooth and quicker response” for the vehicle’s drivetrain.

A first for the WRX STI, the car will now come with nineteen-inch wheels as standard. Tire sizes will be rated at 245/35/19 for the rather sizeable wheel. For braking, a pair of yellow six piston Brembo calipers finds its home inside the wheels of the front axles. These calipers will be matched with more aggressive pad compounds as well as a set of cross-drilled rotors.

The 2018 WRX and WRX STI will hit the showroom floors in the US by this spring.
