The all-new WRX is one of the most highly anticipated models Subaru is launching this year. The rally-inspired sports sedan was originally scheduled to debut on August 19 at the New York International Auto Show. But with the show canceled, Subaru had to push back the launch to a later date. At the time, we didn't know when the rescheduled launch will take place.
Thankfully, we won't have to wait too long. Subaru recently announced that the 2022 WRX will be launched on September 10, 2021. Yes, in a matter of weeks, the sports sedan will be fully revealed, and we won't have to make do with teaser photos anymore.
The 2022 WRX will share the same platform as the current Impreza sedan. Design-wise, expect to see styling cues from the new Levorg wagon. Unfortunately, Subaru's teasers don't reveal much about the vehicle. However, it will come with all-wheel drive as standard. More importantly, it will still be available with a manual transmission and paired to a new 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four similar to the Ascent.
While Subaru did not disclose the engine specs yet, the previous teaser video did show the instrument cluster with a lower redline at 6000 rpm vs the 6600 rpm on the current WRX. The new engine is expected to be in the 300 horsepower range. For reference, the current model packs 268 horsepower and 350 Nm torque.
With Subaru launching the new WRX next month, there's a good chance it might arrive in the Philippines next year. At the same time, we can also expect the automaker to introduce the more powerful WRX STI (complete with a big wing) shortly after the WRX's debut.
Excited? Don't forget to mark your calendars.
