If you ever felt that the XV lacked power, Subaru has got you covered.
For the 2021 model year, Subaru has given the XV (called the Crosstrek in other markets including the US) a new engine option in the North American market – a 2.5-liter naturally-aspirated flat-four that produces 182 horsepower and 239 Nm of torque. If the engine specs seem familiar, that’s because it is the same engine as the one fitted in the Forester.
However, the bigger 2.5-liter engine is not offered throughout the XV model lineup in the US. Instead, it is only available on the Limited trim and the new Sport trim models. Along with the new engine, the Sport trim gets the more upscale dual-mode X-Mode system which features the Snow/Dirt and the additional Deep Snow/Mud setting.
Lower trim levels of the XV in the US continue to use the same 2.0-liter flat-four which is good for 152 horsepower and 197 Nm of torque. While the standard motor is available with either a 6-speed manual and a CVT, the 2.5-liter mill is mated to a CVT only. Regardless of engine or transmission, Subaru’s Symmetrical all-wheel-drive system comes standard on both the 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter mills. Subaru Eyesight is now standard on all CVT-equipped models as well.
Aside from the new engine option, the XV also gets a fresh new look for the 2021 model year. The upgrades are quite minor featuring only a new grill and an updated front bumper with new fog light covers. Despite the small changes, it is enough to give the XV a new refreshing look.
Meanwhile, the Sport trim gets even more visual upgrades including a different grille, unique 17-inch wheels, and more prominent black fender molding. It also has additional black cladding on the front bumper, giving the crossover a more rugged appeal. Plasma Yellow Pearl and Horizon Blue Pearl are available color options on the Sport variant.
Inside, the cabin has mostly been carried over with black or grey leather available. However, the Sport Trim does get yellow stitching and other yellow accents in the cockpit to match the exterior color.
The 2021 Subaru XV is set to go on sale in the US later this year. We have reached out to Motor Image Pilipinas and asked when the updated XV might arrive locally and whether the XV with a more powerful engine will be sold locally. Unfortunately, they said that there is no word on the updated model just yet.
