Planning to head to Subic in the next few months? Don't be surprised to see it with wider roads and additional lanes in the near future. That's because the NLEX Corporation is fast-tracking the completion of the SFEX Capacity Expansion Project.
Just recently, NLEX Corporation announced that work on the said expansion project is now at 85%. This was announced after Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Mark Villar led the progress inspection yesterday on SFEX.
Once completed, the 8.2-kilometer expressway will have two additional lanes, two new spans at the Jadjad and Argonaut Bridges, along with a new tunnel adjacent to the existing one. NLEX Corporation claims that this will improve traffic flow, as well as accommodate more cars.
The project was supposed to be completed last September but due to the pandemic and the imposing of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), construction was temporarily halted. It wasn't until mid-May did construction finally resumed. Work on the bridge was able to reach 50% completion last August.
Construction had to be stopped once again, however, when a steel girder collapsed on one of the segments of the Jadjad Bridge just before entering Subic last month. The freak accident killed 2 construction workers and injuring three others. NLEX Corporation assured that the affected workers of the families will be provided assistance.
The company plans to have the widened road fully-open to the public by the end of the year.
