Jaguar was indeed busy making an even more powerful version of the XE compact saloon. Remember when our spies spotted a prototype XE with wide wheel arches, large alloy wheels and bigger brakes? That car is actually the all-new XE XV Project 8 which the company officially revealed recently.
Limited to only 300 examples worldwide, the super saloon was built by the company's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) division and is billed as the most powerful and agile road car Jaguar has ever produced. Some of the upgrades featured in the Project 8 include lighter body panels, uprated suspension and powertrain and the first application of Jaguar's new Carbon Ceramic Braking system.
“We have really been able to unleash the potential of our engineering and design teams in specifying Project 8. We are at the beginning of a very challenging and exciting development program which will see us focus on ensuring Project 8 delivers track performance on a level previously not targeted by Jaguar,” said Mark Stanton, SVO Director.
Beginning with the exterior, the XE SV Project 8 comes with a flared bodywork along with several carbon fiber goodies. Components such as the hood, front and rear bumpers, front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser are all made from the lightweight composite. This allowed Jaguar to make the car lighter at just 1,745 kg and spread the weight evenly throughout the sedan.
Aside from carbon fiber, aluminum was extensively used as well. The rear doors have been reshaped to allow a more seamless airflow while the rear wing panels have been made wider to accommodate the large 305-width tires. Shod in the wheel wells are 20-inch forged aluminum alloys while sitting behind them are the carbon ceramic disc brakes. Both the front and rear axles get two-piece disc brakes, with the front measuring 15.7-inches and the rear measuring 15.6-inches. The former, however, benefits from six-piston aluminum calipers while the latter gets single-piston sliding calipers.
When launched, the XE SV Project 8 will be available in either two- or four-seat specifications. Both the driver and front passenger seats will have magnesium frames and a more contoured rear seat cushion. Available as optional extras are the more lightweight carbon fiber racing seats which wil lcome with four-point racing harnesses. In terms of upholstery, premium leather along with suede-cloth centers will come as standard on Jaguar's high-performance sedan.
Soft-touch Alcantara blankets the intstrument panel and dashboard, as well as the door trim panels and Project 8 steering wheel. Aluminum paddle shifters sit behind the wheel while the gear lever for the 8-speed automatic gearbox is wrapped in leather. Displaying all of the necesssary information for the driver is the 12.3-inch instrument panel display which comes with full 3D mapping navigation.
Infotainment comes courtesy of the 10.2-inch TouchPro tablet-inspired screen. It supports 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, AM/FM radio, Bluetooth and USB connectivity. It also comes with Dynamic-i which adds a stopwatch, g-meter readout and accelerator and braking graphics to the center touchscreen. It is then topped off with a premium 380W 11-speaker sound system from Meridian.
Propelling the XE SV Project 8 is a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 that cranks out 600 PS and 700 Nm of torque. The high output rating was made possible after Jaguar tweaked both the intake and exhaust, as well as the engine mapping. It even has a modified cooling system to ensure the high-performance sedan peforms at optimal temperatures.
Power is then channeled to all four wheels with the Quickshift eight-speed automatic transmission. Jaguar claimed that the system is capable of swtiching cogs in as little as 200 milliseconds. An Electronic Active Differential (EAD) was also installed on the XE XV Project 8 which works with the Intelligent Driveline Dynamics system that evenly spreads torque delivery on each of the rear wheels.
The all-new Jaguar XE SV Project 8 is slated to make its official public debut at this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed.
