Indian automakers looking to challenge Ford EcoSport
Tata and Mahindra are reportedly working on their respective sub-compact SUV to rival the Ford EcoSport which made its Philippine debut last January.
Tata Motors unveiled the Nexon concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, which suggests the possible sub-compact SUV of the automaker. The Nexon concept was also showcased by Tata Motors at the Geneva Motor Show last March.
The Nexon will be based on the updated version of the Vista X1 platform which also underpins the upcoming Zest and Bolt models.
A report from the auto.ndtv.com said that the Nexon will probably be powered by a 1.2-liter turbocharged Revotron engine that delivers 85 PS with 140 Nm of torque. The diesel model would probably have a 1.3-liter multijet engine sourced from Fiat.
The expected launch of the Tata Nexon is in 2015.
On the other hand, Mahindra, India's leading SUV manufacturer, plans to launch two new SUVs. One of which will be a sub-compact SUV labelled as S101.
The Mahindra S101 sub-compact SUV, which will reportedly be powered by a 1.5-liter twin-turbocharged diesel engine. For the petrol model, the S101 will be equipped with a 1.2-liter engine sourced from embattled Korean automaker SsangYong.
The Mahindra S101 is expected to be launched by the end of 2014.
The introductions might make their entry to the Philippines as well with both automakers making their way to the market. Tata officially made its entry to the Philippine market at the 2014 Manila International Auto Show this April. Mahindra is also reportedly making its way into the Philippines through the Alvarez automotive group.
