Tesla Model Y anticipated to hit the road in 2019
During Tesla's annual shareholder meeting, Elon Musk released a teaser photo of the upcoming Model Y compact utility vehicle. Musk also said that the upcoming Model Y is manufactured unlike any other car before due to having its own platform rather than sharing with the Model 3.
Taking a look at the lone teaser photo of the Model Y, one can see some similar design ques between it and the Model 3. The windshield proportion and rake lines up with that of the Model 3, and so does the hood lines. Keen eyed viewers however may also notice that the Model Y in the photo lacks side mirrors. Whether or not the side mirrorless look will make it into final production we will have to wait and see.
Despite having its own platform however, Musk says that the Model Y SUV will be cheaper to produce compared to the Model 3.
"It would’ve been better to just design an SUV the way an SUV should be designed. Design a sedan – the way a sedan should be designed. It would have been better to just design an SUV the way an SUV should be designed. Design a sedan, the way a sedan should be designed," said Musk.
Musk also expect the Model Y to outsell the Model 3 in the future unlike that with the previous Model X. Tesla expects the Model X to hit the roads around 2019.
