Bentley Bentayga now comes in plug-in hybrid guise

Bentley’s first SUV gets 50km added EV range

Having recently translated their take on luxury onto an SUV platform, Bentley is now keen to make the Bentayga a more efficient proposition by coming up with a plug-in hybrid version for the premium SUV. Flanking its 3.0-liter V6 Turbo powerplant is an electric motor that will provide an extra 50 km of pure electric range based on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

While details about Bentley’s plug-in hybrid system mainly surround the range, there has yet to be any info on power output, battery size, or how the interior may be affected by the added electronics. Some differences in the interior have been made to accommodate the changes made on the powertrain. For starters, instead of a switch for the Automatic Start-Stop system, there are controls for the electric powertrain like EV Drive, Hybrid, and Hold Modes.

An interesting feature from the Bentayga Plug-in Hybrid is its integration with satellite navigation. By taking info about your route and how traffic pans out, the Bentayga Plug-in Hybrid can allocate electric power towards spots where traffic would be most congested – thereby maximizing your range overall by not using fuel where it counts. Users will also have a car connectivity app available from Bentley to control their Bentayga. Features like managing charge or pre-heating/cooling the cabin remotely can be performed through the mobile app.

The exterior doesn’t call much attention to being a plug-in hybrid. The only difference perhaps is the charge port flap on the opposite side of the fuel filler and some copper badging to differentiate it from a standard Bentayga. Should you wish to match your charge port to the badging, the Bentayga’s Power Dock Charger penned by famed designer Philippe Starck sports a copper surround matched with an aluminum center.

The Bentley Bentayga Plug-in Hybrid will go on sale in “unspecified markets” during the latter half of 2018.
