In case you haven't noticed, BMW sure has a thing for huge grills these days. It started with the X7, followed up by the facelifted 7 Series. Even the 3 Series has a pretty wide pair of nostrils too, although not to the extent of the two mentioned above.
But now, prepare to meet the mother of all BMW kidney grills in the form of the Concept 4.
Before we mention the significance of this particular concept, let's take a quick look at its defining feature. The grill spans from the edge of the hood, all the way down to the front apron. BMW says that it draws inspiration from the pre-war 328 roadster and iconic E9 3.0 CSL from the late 60's. That said, those two classics didn't have a grill as wide as the one seen on the Concept 4. There are some intricate details to be seen though. Instead of the usual slats, it has a unique pattern that comprises of small number 4's throughout.
Now on to the car, and this model essentially previews the next-generation 4 Series. If it will make be faithful to the concept, we're expecting what looks like a shrunken 8 Series Coupe. Much like its bigger sibling, the Concept 4 features slim headlights, defined lines on its flanks, a rakish side profile, and a unique take on the classic L-shaped tail lights.
Of course it's a concept, so some design characteristics will be toned-down for the road-going version. Perhaps that gaping maw will be scaled down once the production model is shown. Then again, there was the X7 that stuck with that grill design right up until it was released.
