Long live the Jimny: Suzuki officially launches new-generation mini 4x4

After teasing fans with photos and minute details, Suzuki has officially revealed the all-new Jimny in full. Powered by a new 1.5-liter engine along with plenty of safety kit, the 2019 Jimny comes with a retro-modern design, as well as new creature comforts that makes it well-suited for the urban crawl or the great outdoors.

As seen from before, the all-new Jimny gets a retro-inspired exterior that harks back to past 4x4s. The distinct front fascia with the circular LED headlights and five-slat grill give the Jimny a rugged and 'macho' look. Large fender flares, along with stylish 15-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 195/80 series tires further spruce up the Jimny's go-anywhere look. At the back, the vertical taillights have been replaced with horizontal units placed near the rear bumper. Still present, however, is the spare tire carrier which has become a signature look for the Jimny.

Underneath the all-new body is a tried-and-tested ladder frame chassis which guarantees a solid platform for off-road performance. Meanwhile, both the front and rear axles are suspended by a 3-link rigid axle with coil springs. According to Suzuki, this ensures that the tires remain planted to the ground especially in rough driving conditions.

Size-wise, the 2019 Jimny measures 3645mm long (includes spare tire carrier), 1645mm wide, 1725mm tall (with roof rails) and has a 2250mm wheelbase. Compared to the outgoing model, the new 4x4 is shorter in length by 50 mm, wider by 45mm and 20mm taller. The wheelbase remains the same as before, however. Also, ground clearance for the Jimny is rated at 210mm.

Inside, the Jimny gets a simple yet more modern cabin design. It borrows some styling cues from the all-new Swift thanks to the hooded gauges, three-spoke steering wheel and automatic climate control dials on the center console. Serving as a throwback to past 4x4s is the large grab-handle for the front passenger. Subtle hints of faux metal trim as well as gloss black plastic accents shed some of the Jimny's utilitarian feel. Topping it all off is the large touchscreen infotainment system placed on the center of the dashboard.

Despite its small size, Suzuki gave the Jimny plenty of cubby holes and other storage pockets that can hold phones, gadgets and other items. Another improvement over the previous generation are the fold-flat seats at the back. This makes storing luggage easier while also improving overall cabin space.

An all-new engine now powers the 2019 Jimny. Out goes the 1.3-liter 'M13A' four-cylinder as it has been succeeded by a bigger 1.5-liter inline-four. Dubbed the 'K15B', the engine benefits from multi-point injection (MPI) and produces 102 PS at 6000 rpm along with 130 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. There is a turbocharged 658cc 3-cylinder engine, but it’s for Japan market models; the diminutive motor qualifies the Jimny for Japan’s kei car class.

The Jimny comes with Suzuki's all-new part-time 4WD system called AllGrip Pro and it can be specified with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a four-speed automatic transmission. Like the previous model, the 2019 Jimny still comes with a low-range transfer box for improved maneuverability off the beaten path.

In terms of tech, the Japan-spec Jimny is equipped with a plethora of high-tech safety kit. For starters, the 2019 Jimny comes with forward collision warning with automatic braking called DSBS. It works by way of a camera and a laser sensor that constantly monitors the road. When it detects a possible collision with another car or pedestrian, the system alerts the driver with audio cues. Should the system detect no application of the brakes by the driver, DSBS can automatically apply the full braking force to lessen or avoid the impact.

Other safety features on the Jimny include road weaving alert, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and auto high beam assist. Anti-lock brakes, hill-start assist, hill-descent control, limited-slip differential and traction control make sure the Jimny stays mobile and safe both on- and off-road.

The all-new Suzuki Jimny is expected to arrive in the Philippines some time late next year.
