More power, better handling arrive in limited WRX STI Type RA
For the first time ever, Subaru will share their limited edition WRX STI Type RA with the rest of the world. ‘RA’, which stands for ‘Record Attempt’, is Subaru’s take on equipping the WRX STI with whatever it needs to claim the Nürburgring lap record.
While previous iterations were only released in Japan, it looks like the 2018 Type RA will make itself known to the global stage. Fans of the Impreza lineage know that the Type RA is part of the upper echelon of STI models. Having been geared towards outright track performance, the Type RA comes with a host of new equipment to extract the most out of the four-wheel drive sedan on track.
The WRX STI’s claim to fame is of course its 2.5L flat-four EJ25 boxer engine. For the RA, it receives a bump in power courtesy of a cold air intake, a new exhaust, reinforced pistons, with all the new hardware controlled by a re-mapped ECU. All this yields to a meager 5PS bump in power (from 305PS to 310PS), but perhaps we may see a difference in torque figures once they’ve been released (To give you an idea the stock WRX STI has 393 Nm of torque). The boxer motor is still mated to a six-speed manual transmission, although this time Subaru have revised the third gear ratio as well as added a short-throw shifter for faster shifting.
On the footwork side of things, Subaru have turned to Bilstein for the RA’s set of dampers. The 19-inch BBS alloys are wrapped in Yokohama Advan rubber to get all that grip onto the ground while large Brembo calipers and cross-drilled rotors find their home behind the wheels. All these upgrades to handling will be optimized thanks to STI’s Vehicle Dynamics Control system.
To shed weight, the Type RA receives a carbon fiber roof and a wing that will further add downforce. An STI chin as well as cherry blossom accents adorn the Type RA to distinguish it from standard fare.
The interior will receive a pair of Recaro seats to keep the driver in place and an ultrasuede steering wheel for maximum grip. The car will also receive a plaque determining its number in the series of only 500 cars.
Subaru says they will reveal more details in the coming months, but we can expect the WRX STI Type RA to come out in the first quarter of 2018.
