Last September 22, Motor Image Pilipinas, Inc., the exclusive distributor of Subaru vehicles in the Philippines, held the 2018 Subaru Palm Challenge: Philippine Face-Off on 9th Avenue, Bonifacio High Street, Taguig. Almost 100 participants entered the event, aspiring to be the representatives of the country. However, only the last 10 standing were chosen and will be representing the Philippines in the Regional Finals to be held in Singapore.
The local leg began at 9:00 AM with participants challenged to keep their hands on one of the four Subaru XVs. They have to hold on the longest without any protection from the elements be it sun or rain.
It was only after nine hours when the final ten contestants remained. Despite already making it to the finals, each of them were still vying to be crowned the winner of the Palm Challenge Philippine Leg. The winner this year is a first time competitor, Rey Balincutas who managed to hold on with a time of 9:30:24.
Meanwhile, some experienced competitors from previous Palm Challenges were unable to make the cut such as Juan Furiscal and Jaspher Galaura, both part of last year’s top ten, who fell early in the competition. Last year’s runner up Rheden Pinoliad and Alex Neblasca also didn’t make it through. Last year’s team captain Carlo Talahib and 2017 Philippine Palm Challenge winner Filmark Bernante rejoins the 2018 team.
The Philippine team is set to compete against other Asian countries on October 26 to 31 at the 2018 Subaru Palm Challenge Regional Finals to be held in Singapore. So far, the Philippines has yet to win the competition with the closest being in third place back in 2016. Could this be the year the Philippines claim the crown?
