From the Goodwood Festival of Speed to nearly the entire 2020 season calendar of Formula 1, major automotive events around the world have been postponed or canceled due to the on-going coronavirus pandemic. Now, it seems that another very prestigious event held every August has been canceled as well: the world-famous Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

The organizers of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance officially announced that this year’s show, initially scheduled for August 16, 2020, has been canceled. As such, the show will not be rescheduled to a later date and will be skipped this year. Instead, the 70th running of the prestigious show will be held on August 15, 2021.

“My heart goes out to all of the people who are involved in the Pebble Beach Concours and who are impacted by this decision. Many of our entrants have been working on a special car for years, and this was to be their moment. Some of our overseas entrants were nearing the point of putting their cars on boats and planes, and their own travel arrangements have long been made. The same is true for many of our international cadre of judges,” said Concours Chairman Sandra Button.

Although the event will resume in 2021, the same set of cars that were scheduled to appear this year will still be displayed at next year’s event. The car selections for the 70th Pebble Beach Concours have already been completed, and entrants were notified of their acceptance earlier this month. According to officials, the acceptance letters state that cars invited were to appear at the 70th celebration — even if it was delayed.

Considering that the annual Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is part of the Monterey car week, it won’t be surprising if the other events are also canceled. The Quail motorsports gathering has likewise followed the lead of the Pebble Beach Concours and canceled their event this year. Other events include the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, as well as several high-profile auctions. Automakers have even revealed one-off concepts and production models at the event as well.
