Mention the word Cobra to any car enthusiast, and most will think of a small yet powerful roadster and the late Carroll Shelby. A product of British-based AC Cars and Shelby, the Cobra proved that you can make a fast car by putting a big V8 motor in a lightweight body.
Ever since then, other automakers have tried adopting the same formula into their sports cars and roadsters. But with electrification becoming the new trend in the automotive scene, where does this leave AC Cars?
Enter the AC Cobra Series 4-electric, a zero-emissions version of the famous roadster. As the name implies, it uses electric motors instead of a roaring V8 engine. These were built and supplied by AC’s technical partner, Falcon Electric.
While the exterior looks the same as its V8-powered brethren, that’s about where the similarities end.
There are two versions available of the Cobra Series 4 electric - the base 230 kW variant, and the top-of-the-line 460 kW variant. The former puts out 312 PS and can go from 0 - 97 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The latter, meanwhile, generates 625 PS and can sprint from 0 - 97 km/h in just 3.8 seconds.
The 230 kW version can cover 305 km on a single charge, while the more powerful 460 kW model can only do 257 km on a full charge. Why the range discrepancy between the two models? Well, the base version only weighs in at 1,190 kg. The more powerful variant is heavier at 1,240 kg since it uses larger batteries.
AC Cars are now accepting reservations for the electric Cobra, with deliveries set to begin sometime in late 2021. But with AC Cars now offering electric versions of the Cobra, what does this mean for its V8-powered Cobra? Thankfully, AC Cars says the V8 version is still available. In fact, the company actually gave it a new 6.2-liter supercharged V8 that churns out 659 PS and 880 Nm of torque.
While some brands are still hesitant to shift to electric, AC Cars actually embraced the change and developed a zero-emissions Cobra. It may not have eight cylinders under the hood, but we’re sure that the electric Cobra can easily go toe-to-toe with its V8 counterpart.
