By now, China's plans to conquer our auto industry is in full swing. Many brands are already here, bringing a variety of new models to the market with varying degrees of success, and there are more on the way.
But one brand has really been impressive. Some would say that MG has been interesting because the company racked up significant sales in 2019 to break into the top 10 auto brands in terms of volume, but we're referring to another: Geely.
Their initial model, the Coolray, is seriously impressive in terms of initial quality, features, and performance, so much so that Japanese company Sojitz decided to be the distributor; a strange fact that's unheard of in our industry or even worldwide as far as we know.
But one thing has been piquing our curiousity: what will the company launch next?
A few weeks ago, we were able to get a peek at what will be Geely's next new model for the Philippine market: a stylish 5-seat crossover that's larger than the Coolray and packs even more features such as a mild hybrid system and massive moonroof that almost spans the, well, entire roof.
In China, it's called the Geely Boyue Pro, but for the Philippine market, they'll call it the Geely Azkarra.
We actually had to check if they will use that unusual name, and they confirmed it: the Geely Azkarra will be their next crossover model. After some checking, it seems one of their Middle East distributors (Geely Kuwait) also use the same name, so it stands to reason that this will be the international model.
The Azkarra will have a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with a mild hybrid system. The features include a 7-speed dual clutch for the top spec model, an all-wheel drive system, a 12.3-inch audio system, wireless charging, and much more.
In a previous report, we indicated that the model has a target price of about PhP 1.6 million for the top of the line model. It appears that there might be a lower grade model for less than that which has a 6-speed automatic instead of a dual clutch, but the final specifications are still unclear.
The Azkarra will compete against models in the compact crossover class such as the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Subaru Forester, so on and so forth.
We'll release more of the information on the Azkarra as soon as the full specification sheet becomes available.
