An action film wouldn't be complete without the inclusion of a high-speed, adrenaline-pumping car chase. Sure fight scenes and gun battles are equally intense but there's something about high-speed chases that makes it even all the more better.
Ford appears to have thought of just that after teaming up with camera car company Pursuit Systems. Say hello to the Ford Edge ST camera car; designed and built to film high-speed chase scenes and other hard-to-capture action footage for movies and commercials.
With its highly-tuned turbocharged V6, agile handling and relatively tall ride height, it has the makings a quick pursuit vehicle for capturing the perfect shot.
“Speed, acceleration, braking, handling, even roominess – Edge ST has it all. Our shoots often demand a lot of the equipment we use, and especially the vehicles. In every way, Edge ST measures up,” said Mike Johnson, racer, stunt driver and CEO of Pursuit Systems.
Starting with the most obvious upgrade on the Edge ST, the crossover gets a remote-controlled, roof-mounted crane which holds the camera. It has a gyro-stabilized mount which keeps it stable on any road condition and is capable of capturing different angles thanks to the extendable crane arm. The interior, on the other hand, has been gutted to make additional room for the camera equipment, as well as for the crew.
Under the hood lives the 2.7-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6. In stock form, the six-cylinder engine puts out a healthy 335 PS and a stump-pulling 515 Nm of torque. However, with the addition of a crane and other camera equipment, Ford retuned the engine to compensate the additional 453 kg weight. Power is transferred to an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Besides tweaking engine performance, Ford also installed other equipment to make it keep up with the 'action'. It has air-suspension which helps manage the weight increase, a roll cage to protect occupants and additional wiring for video monitors that will allow the crew to see footage in real-time.
“We’ve never done anything like this before with an SUV because there’s never been an SUV like Edge ST in our showroom. It has the performance chops and utility to keep up with fast-paced moviemaking,” said Mark Grueber, Ford SUV Marketing Manager.
The Ford Edge ST camera car will join Pursuit Systems' fast fleet which consist of a BMW X5 M, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, and Porsche Cayenne Turbo as such.
