While the 3 and 5 Series continue to be BMW's bread and butter, the German automaker is also hard at work expanding their small car lineup. Earlier this year, we saw the all-new 1 Series, which has switched to front-wheel drive. Now, we'll see yet another expansion of their entry-level range in the form of the 2 Series Gran Coupe.

The car was spied as far back as last year and it presents a different direction from junior BMWs of the past. This time around, the German automaker has released 'official spyshots' of the car, showing us ever more details than before. Like the 1 Series, this new 2 Series will be front-wheel drive as well.

From the looks of it, the 2 Series Gran Coupe looks similar to the front as its hatchback counterpart. There's the large, upswept headlights seen on the hatch, as well as the big-wide kidneys BMWs have these days. It's also the M Sport model with its angular and aggressive bumpers, plus those large M Sport brakes show off its performance intention. From the windshield back however, it appears sleeker than the 1 Series.

For starters, the windshield is more rakish and the roof line is lower. It's also longer than the hatch, and the tail end forms a smooth, flowing design. In line with the 'coupe' theme, the 2 Series Gran Coupe has pillarless doors, much like its big brother, the 4 Series Gran Coupe. As for the rear, there's the 8 Series-inspired tail lights with its slim look and subtle L-shape.

That's the looks covered, what about the specs? BMW hasn't released anything just yet although the German website mentioned that the car shown is an M235i xDrive. If we were to base it on the range-topping 1 Series, the M135i xDrive, we're looking at 306 PS and 450 Nm of torque from its boosted 2.0-liter engine. It then sends the power to all four wheels, and it will likely have an eight-speed automatic transmission.

As for the rest of the range, we're expecting it to be similar, if not exactly the same, as the 1 Series. That means we're looking at two gas-fed and three turbodiesel options. Aside from the aforementioned turbocharged 2.0, there's also the 1.5-liter, three-cylinder engine with 140 PS. On to diesels, there's the 116d with 116 PS, 118d with 150 PS, and 120d with 190 PS.
