Back in the 1980s, Porsche was still involved with Formula 1 albeit as an engine supplier to the McLaren Formula 1 team under the TAG name brand. At the time, they produced the race winning twin-turbo V6s which were used in the cars of Formula 1 world champions Niki Lauda and Alain Prost. Prior to fitting it in F1 cars however, the engine – unmodified – was fitted onto a Porsche 930 test mule with the car's exterior remaining mostly stock. The said car is now locked away at the Porsche museum, only shown at various events.
Lazante however, known for converting McLaren F1 and P1 GTRs into road cars, will soon be producing 11 models of the said TAG V6-powered Porsche 911. More so, they will be using the actual Porsche-built TAG Formula 1 engines which raced in the 1980s. According to their Instagram post, Lazante already has gotten the green light from McLaren to go with the project.
At the recently concluded Rennsport Reunion, Lazante already had one of the TAG-V6 Porsche 930s on display. Much like the actual test mule, the 930 appears to be mostly stock and is only fitted with RUF wheels, making it look like a standard 911 Turbo. However, under the hood it is hiding the F1-powerplant. To make the cars more special, each one will be fitted with plaques on the engine bay showing the engine's racing history, drivers, wins and which F1 chassis it was fitted on.
According to McLaren, the Porsche twin-turbo V6 Formula 1 engines were capable of producing 750 horsepower in race trim. That said, Lazante did not mention how much power the engines will be producing once fitted on the 911. That said, expect it to be detuned for longeivity, but continue to produce supercar-level power figures considering it is a Formula 1 engine.
There is still no word as to how much one will cost. Do expect it to be very expensive, especially the engines used by the world champion Formula 1 drivers.
