2015 Mazda2 Sedan debuts along with new 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D engine
After an exterior reveal last week, the 2015 Mazda2 Sedan made its global debut at the 2014 Thailand Motor Expo. The 2015 Mazda2 Sedan follows the footsteps of its larger siblings such as the Mazda3 and Mazda6 which feature SkyActiv technology and 'Kodo' styling.
The exterior styling of the 2015 Mazda2 Sedan was previewed by the Hazumi concept which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show and the hatchback form was officially unveiled at Hofu earlier this year. It follows the Kodo soul in motion design language, thereby making it a virtually scaled-down version of the Mazda3 and Mazda6 sedans.
Powering the Thai-market Mazda2 Sedan and Hatchbacks as shown at the show will be the 1.5-liter SkyActiv-D engine capable of 105 PS and 220 Nm of torque. To aid in efficiency, it features Mazda’s 'i-stop’ auto stop/go system and i-ELOOP regenerative braking to help power air-conditioning and other electric functions.
The Mazda2 is expected to be revealed for the Philippine market next year, but will likely be fitted with a gas-fed engine instead due to the more stringent diesel fuel requirements of the SkyActiv-D powertrain.
The interior is similar to the hatchback version which features the MZD connect, HMI touchscreen with the commander control knob, and active driving display. However, ASEAN versions are likely to feature a dark interior theme.
For safety, dynamic stability control will also supplement dual airbags and anti-lock brakes.
Production of the Mazda2 will come from the Auto Alliance Thailand facility in Rayong which will supply vehicles for the ASEAN and Oceania.
