Tokyo 2011: Toyota reveals 86 Sports Coupe

The 86 is back!

Let's face it. Toyota has not really been known for exciting cars for the past decade.

Well, over at the Tokyo Motor Show, Toyota will be unveiling their latest, most exciting production car in recent memory: the GT-86.

In the last couple of years, they've been teasing us with the FT-86 concepts, and even Subaru joined in on the fun as they revealed their FT-86-based BRZ Concept as after all, the car is being jointly developed by the two automakers.

The GT-86 is a rear wheel drive coupe and will be powered by Subaru's 2 liter flat four boxer engine. The engine will benefit from Toyota's D-4S technology (direct injection) and will produce 200 (DIN) horsepower and 205 newton meters of torque.

The car will get 17 inch wheels as standard, and will measure 4,240 mm long, 1,285 mm tall and 2,570 mm wide. The car will also come with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission, and has been tuned for a 53/47 (front/rear) weight distribution.

In Europe, the car will be called the GT-86 while in Japan the car will be called the 86, paying homage to their drifting icon of the 80's, the Hachi Roku (AE86).

As implied by a reliable source within Toyota Motors Philippines, there is a good possibility that the car will arrive here sometime next year along with the next generation Camry.
