The mysterious concept Nissan originally teased a few days ago is now official. Called the IDS concept, it is an all-electric vehicle that comes with a self-driving feature. Combining the benefits and practicality of an electric vehicle and smart driving software, the IDS concept shows the capability of next-generation vehicles according to the automaker.
“Nissan's forthcoming technologies will revolutionize the relationship between car and driver, and future mobility,” said Carlos Ghosn, Nissan President and CEO.
Starting with the front, the concept car features the brand's signature V-Motion grill along with the boomerang-shaped headlights. The side gets large 5-spoke alloy wheels and is rounded off with wide rear quarter panels. Over to the rear, the taillights also receive the eye-catching boomerang shape and is finished off with an illuminated tailgate trim.
In addition, its body is made entirely out of carbon fiber and uses thin 175mm tires to minimize air and roll resistance.
Inside, the 4-seater EV concept features an open-air design that can switch between two different cabin styles, depending if it is on Piloted Mode or Manual Mode. If the driver sets the car to autonomous driving, the steering wheel recedes into the instrument panel and is replaced by a large flat screen. This display manages the system's other functions such as infotainment, voice commands and gestures. The front seats can also be swiveled to face the rear passengers.
The cabin then reverts to the more traditional layout when it is set to Manual Mode. All seats face forward and the steering wheel and other instrument gauges reappear from the center console.
The electric powertrain was not entirely detailed though Nissan did state it is powered by a 60 kWh battery. Over to its autonomous driving function called the Nissan Intelligent Drive, the system 'compensates for human error, which causes 90% of all car accidents'. A nifty trait of the system is that when it is doing the driving for you, it will imitate the driver's own style from accelerating to braking.
During Manual Mode, the system is still active and can provide assistance when navigating through roads or help prevent accidents. The onboard artificial intelligence is also smart enough to provide information about traffic updates, schedule and personal interests.
There is word yet if this will be a prelude to a full production EV that will come with autonomous driving as standard.
