Toyota celebrates 30 years in the Philippines

President Duterte and Toyota president Akio Toyoda grace the event

It has been 30 years since Toyota Motor Philippines Corporation (TMP) officially set up shop in the country. Today, the Japanese automaker is celebrating three decades of sustained success by holding an 30th anniversary celebration at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Bonifacio Global City with Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte as the guest-of-honor. Together with President Duterte, Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda also graced TMP's 30th anniversary.

“We share this happy day with all of you who have stood with us in our journey. I firmly believe that the partnership we have developed and harnessed remains to be the strong backbone of Toyota’s success in the Philippines,” said TMP president Satoru Suzuki.

For sixteen consecutive years, TMP has maintained the Triple Crown of manufacturers – being number one in passenger car sales, commercial vehicle sales, and overall sales. In 2017 alone, TMP managed to sell over 180,000 units, four times greater than what it was selling 10 years ago. Because of this, TMP was driven to the Top 9 in terms of Toyota's global vehicle sales, and Top 4 in the ASEAN region.

Together with TMP's growth, it has also helped contritbute to long-term development in the country through its investments in manufacturing development of local parts and more importantly, provide employment opportunities. As TMP moves forward, the company will also aim to provide mobility solutions in the country.

"Through the years, Toyota has become part of the lives of the Filipino. I distinctly remember the time that one year’s sales was a mere 15,000 units and fast forward 30 years later, Toyota ended 2017 with 184,000 units, lodging Philippines to #9 in Toyota’s global sales. It was a result of years of passion, discipline and creating a culture to cultivate quality, and the commitment to achieve the 'Always Better' in everything we do. To this we say, thank you for all your support to Toyota."

President Duterte himself congratulated Toyota, and thanked them for their contributions to the economy.

"Toyota Motor Philippines is not only a leader in the production of quality vehicles. It is also a major driver of our economy, encouraging investments that spur national development," said President Duterte during the ceremony. "As we continue to institute reforms in governance, Toyota Motor Philippines can count on my full support as it continues to bring the standards of the automotive industry to greater heights."

TMC president Akio Toyoda expressed his gratitude to the Philippine Government and to the Filipino people as well.

“I would like to reserve my most sincere and deepest thanks for all the people of the Philippines. You warmly accepted us into your homes. Your Excellency, President Duterte, I truly appreciate your people. The Filipinos. Like you, Toyota places great importance in nurturing our people,” said Toyoda.

Of course, the chief executive of one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world had to pause to take a selfie, noting that the Philippines is the selfie capital in the world.

To signify its commitment to local manufacturing, TMP will be donating 30 locally made vehicles – 20 units of the all new Vios and 10 units of the Innova – to the government to symbolize the brand's 30 year anniversary. Moreover, 3 additional Hiace units will also be turned over. President Duterte received these vehicles on behalf of the National Government.
