Grab collaboration to extend reach of Toyota Mobility Service Platform

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC), together with Toyota Financial Services (TFS) and Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance Co.,Ltd. (Aioi) has announced that they will be collaborating with Grab, Inc. (Grab) in order to provide a better ride-hailing service in the Southeast Asian region. Along with the partnership, Toyota will also be expanding their Mobility Service Platform (MSPF) into the region, which is said to deliver greater benefits to its fleet customers.

"Through this collaboration with Grab, we would like to explore new ways of delivering secure, convenient and attractive mobility services to our fleet customers in Southeast Asia." said Shigeki Tomoyama, Senior Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation and President of the Connected Company.

The Connected Company, a TMC in-house company, developed the data-transmission TransLog driving recorder, a device that captures driving patterns and deliver telematics services like the vehicle position management system to fleet customers. TransLog will then be installed in 100 grab rental cars enabling Toyota and Grab to analyze the data, and could enhance Grab experience for drivers.

Apart from the MSPF expansion, Toyota has also invested in the Singapore-based ride-hailing app. Grab has confirmed the automaker's investment, but did not disclose the amount. Furthermore, Grab is also the first company Next Technology Fund, the general trading company of Toyota Group, has invested in since it was launched by Toyota Tsusho last April 2017.

"We are confident this will benefit our driver partners, and we look forward to exploring other ways to collaborate with Toyota in the future,” said Anthony Tan, co-founder and CEO of Grab Inc.

Grab claims to be the number one on-demand transportation platform in Southeast Asia, with a market share of 95 percent in third-party taxi-hailing and 72% in private vehicle hailing. The ride-hailing company hopes to futher expand their reach which they say has been downloaded by over 55 million smartphones and used by 1.2 million drivers.
