We've already learned that Toyota is planning to build a more powerful, Gazoo Racing-prepared Corolla in the future as confirmed by the company's deputy chief designer Toshio Kanei. At the moment however, he has not revealed any details regarding the upcoming hot hatch and when it might debut.
With that in mind, the Corolla GR Sport, which Toyota recently revealed ahead of its public debut in Geneva, is not the performance-oriented model we have been hoping for. But, could this new model preview what is to come from Gazoo Racing?
Like all other GR Sport models, the Corolla GR Sport merely features a cosmetic upgrade without any mechanical upgrades fitted. The changes made to the Corolla GR Sport include a new front grill finished in dark chrome, exclusive side skirts, side rockers and a new rear diffuser.
The GR Sport variant also comes standard with LED headlights, privacy glass rear windows and fog lights. Rounding up the exterior changes on the Corolla GR Sport are the new 18-inch wheels and exclusive Dynamic Grey color.
While no photos were provided, Toyota says the interior of the Corolla GR Sport has also received an upgrade. It features sports seats with black fabric and leather bolsters which can be upgraded to full leather as an option. Black and red accents can then be found throughout the cabin.
The Corolla GR Sport is available in both hatchback or touring sports (wagon) models. There is currently no word on whether the GR Sport will also be offered to the Corolla sedan. In Europe, customers can also choose between the 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter electrified powertrains for their Corolla GR Sport.
Toyota will have the Corolla GR Sport on sale in Europe from January of 2020.
