Aside from their first-ever win at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, Toyota have announced another interesting tidbit for racing fans. From the looks of it, Toyota’s racing arm Gazoo Racing will be developing the recently revealed Super Sport Concept for production. This means Toyota is poised to step into the hypercar segment with their first ever model.
Revealed during this year’s 2018 Tokyo Auto Salon, the Gazoo Racing Super Sport Concept was developed from the current winning TS050 Hybrid. Fitted with a 2.4L bi-turbo V6 and augmented with a racing version of the Toyota Hybrid System, the Le Mans Prototype-derived hypercar will likely be pushing somewhere in the neighborhood of 1000 PS.
Judging from photos, the Super Sport Concept makes use of a full carbon fiber monococque as the core of its body. Based on its profile, the production model may see a lot more changes considering the concept is using rear view cameras instead of traditional side mirrors. That said, we may see the single center headlamp design omitted as well.
"We started this project because we believe that creating a super sports car that delivers the same appeal as the TS050 Hybrid greatly adds to Toyota’s involvement in the WEC. And at some point in the near future, customers will have a chance to get behind the wheel of this incredible machine and experience its astonishing power and driving performance." said Shigeki Tomoyama, Toyota Gazoo Racing president.
Production dates for the Gazoo Racing Super Sport Concept have yet to surface, but considering how Toyota wants to jump in with a new hypercar is a nice surprise for fans.
