Toyota gives the 86 sports coupe a Le Mans makeover

Toyota pays homage to 86th 24 Hour of Le Mans with three special 86's

Toyota has prepared a trio of special edition 86's as tribute to the world's greatest endurance race: the 86th running of the 24 hours of Le Mans. The three sports coupes are finished in different heritage liveries which graced Toyota's former Le Mans racers. Coincidentally, the models were also revealed on June 8 (8/6) to further the '86' pun.

The cars were all prepared by Toyota UK, and all are equipped with some slight modifications. All three vehicles come with a fixed rear spoiler as inspired by the aggressive aero of Le Mans racers. The suspension has also been lowered by 40mm and was fitted with aftermarket wheels, which are said to replicate the design of their respective racers they represent. Completing the modification list is a stainless steel Milltek exhaust.

Starting off with the oldest livery among the three, the blue-on-white Casio livery was originally found on the Toyota TS010 which was powered by a 3.5-liter V10 with around 700 PS. It managed to secure a 2nd place finish in the 1992 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The next 86 is inspired by the 1998 TS020 or also known as the GT-One sporting the red-white Zent livery. It is one of Toyota's most popular LMP1 cars. Originally intended as a GT1 car, it managed to secure a 2nd place finish in the 1999 Le Mans 24.

Should the last livery be familiar, that is becaue it is a nod to the current livery used by Toyota in the 2016 TS050 Hybrid. Yes, the LMP1 car that came close to winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2016.

Toyota says all three liveries have been scaled to match the lines of the 86 body. Furthermore, the automaker has no plans to put the trio of special edition 86's into production.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans will take place this weekend on June 16 and 17 at the Circuit de le Sarthe in France.
