The new Toyota GR Yaris is making rounds around South East Asia. After making its regional debut in Thailand earlier this year, Toyota's hot hatch is now out in Malaysia. That makes us wonder, will the Philippines be next to get the all-wheel-drive rally-bred GR Yaris in the ASEAN region? We certainly hope so.
As mentioned before, most of the vehicles that debut in Thailand often arrive in the Philippines and other ASEAN countries. Given that the GR Yaris is now in Malaysia, it certainly reinforces the idea of the hot hatch making its way to the Philippines sometime in 2021. Rumors even say that Toyota's hot hatch might arrive sometime in Q2 2021. Do remember Toyota is also pushing the Gazoo Racing brand in the region, the Vios GR-S being a good example.
Since there's no official word or teaser from Toyota Motor Philippines yet, let's check out the Malaysian-spec GR Yaris. Thankfully, it's not the front-wheel-drive, 120 HP model that was launched there. Our ASEAN neighbor received the good stuff with a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine, 6-speed manual, and all-wheel-drive. The only visual difference we see is that the Malaysian-spec GR Yaris has a smaller infotainment system compared to the one we saw in Japan earlier this year.
Interestingly, it is priced a lot cheaper compared to Thailand. In Malaysia, the GR Yaris retails for RM 299,000 or roughly PHP 3.5 million converted. Compared to Thailand's price of 2.69 million baht or about PHP 4.3 million when converted. That makes it nearly PhP 800,000 cheaper. The only question now is how much will the GR Yaris cost in the Philippines, assuming it arrives.
If Toyota Motor Philippines can bring in the GR Supra, we have high hopes for the hot Yaris to land here too. Fingers crossed.
