In keeping the Land Cruiser up-to-date in terms of powertrain, Toyota has just launched an all-new turbo-diesel powerplant that delivers more power while at the same time reduces fuel consumption. Called 1GD-FTV, the 2.8-liter turbocharged inline-four is the same engine that will power the range-topping variant of the upcoming 2016 Hilux.
The new turbo-diesel has a maximum output of 177 PS and a torque rating of 420 Nm that is available between 1,400 – 2,400 rpm on 6-speed manual models. On the other hand, Land Cruiser Prados fitted with the 6-speed automatic gearbox get an additional 30 Nm of torque and is readily available between 1,600 - 2,400 rpm.
Helping the automatic model get better mileage according to Toyota is a new transmission control logic that allows up to 9% increase in fuel economy and reduced emissions. The combined cycle performance of the new 2.8-liter lump resulted in a 13.8 km/l fuel average along with 194g/km of C02.
There is no word yet if Toyota Motors Philippines will offer the new 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV to the current Prado but the company will be holding the local launch of the 2016 Hilux at around August.
