In 2003, Toyota launched a compact sedan that would become the standard for compact cars in the Southeast Asian region. The Vios, as it is known, would then been the bestselling car in its class in the aforementioned region, selling about 445,000 units.
Now, after four years and a mild facelift, Toyota moves forward anew with the all-new Vios. Completely restyled inside and out, it is known elsewhere as the Toyota Belta or the Yaris Sedan. Hence, the new Vios is now Toyota's compact car for the world.
For Toyota, having a car doesn't just address one's transportation needs; it also guarantees one his or her personal space while on the road. Banking on this premise, Toyota considered everything in and out of the new Vios to make that vehicle experience extra special. For starters, the exterior is given the urban treatment, which is, being sleek, compact, and attractive, all at the same time. The front end features a new V-shape design that's reminiscent of a grinning person, similar to its Yaris brother. The lower and longer body uses aerodynamics to its maximum advantage and the stretched wheelbase contributes to its stability. Integrated turn signal lamps, power folding large-type side mirrors, and a printed antenna are the highlights of the Vios' new exterior.
The interior space of the new Vios is now roomier, spacious, and comfortable. For the top variant, leather upholstery is a given, as well as a center armrest for that extra touch of comfort which is previously unseen in this class. There is also a 60/40 split fold rear seats to accommodate more cargo just in case the new larger trunk isn't enough. Increased legroom for the rear passengers is now available, thanks to the now flat floorpan. Moving to the front area, Optitron gauges adorn the centrally positioned gauge pod, as well as a MID (Multi Information Display). A 2-DIN integrated audio system is placed on the silver-accented center console, which provides for a more modern interior look compared to other vehicles.
In a study conducted by Toyota, safety is indeed a paramount concern in this price-conscious segment. Therefore, Anti-Lock Brakes with EBD and BA are standard in the 1.5-liter variant, as well as dual front air bags. Stopping power is indeed augmented in the new Vios, as four-wheel disc brakes are available. The Toyota GOA safety body is designed to distribute the impact of a crash throughout the whole body. Together with this, the pedestrian injury reduction technology helps reduce injury for pedestrians with impact absorbing areas around the fender, cowl panel, and hood.
The new Vios is powered by Toyota's NZ family of engines, all with VVT-I technology. The 1.3 and 1.5-liter engines promises torquey performance while returning excellent fuel economy, as demonstrated in various fuel economy runs conducted both by the government and private groups.
The 2007 Vios will be locally assembled in Toyota's Sta. Rosa plant alongside the Innova. It will be available to the public by the end of August 2007. Four variants will be available, starting from the fleet-grade 1.3 J M/T variant for 575,000 to the top-level 1.5 G A/T variant with leather upholstery for 811,000.
