Despite the tough market conditions brought about by a higher excise tax on vehicles and fuel last 2018, Toyota Motor Philippines (TMP) continues to be the country's top automaker after recently winning their 17th consecutive Triple Crown. TMP managed to maintain its position as the number one brand in passenger car (PC) sales, commercial vehicle sales (CV) and overall sales; topping 9 key segments in the market last year.
For 2018, Philippine auto sales was recorded at 401,803 units, a 15.22% decline from 2017's record high of 473,943 units. Despite the drop in overall sales, TMP still managed to sell over 153,000 units last year, garnering 38.2% market share, and retaining the number one spot. That said, TMP sales still declined by 17% compared to 2017. Meanwhile, the Santa Rosa plant was able to produce a total of 46,117 units.
Toyota's best selling model for 2018 was the all-new Vios introduced earlier this year, having sold 25,740 units. Meanwhile, Toyota's best selling vehicle in 2017, the Fortuner, now takes second place with 23,082 units old. Following behind the Fortuner is the Wigo with 21,234 units sold. Rounding up TMP's top 5 best selling models for 2018 would be the Hilux and Innova with 18,287 and 18,175 units sold, respectively.
Mr. Satoru Suzuki, president of TMP, expressed his optimism for 2019 in being a more prosperous year for the automaker. Aside from new model launches, he added that we should expect more things to come later on.
"Despite the unfavorable climate of 2018, recording a 17% decline in sales versus 2017, Toyota was able to hold its ground. It was truly a challenging year, and we are hopeful that this year will be more auspicious," said Suzuki.
