Toyota recalling 102,000 vehicles due to possible engine failure

Toyota has been facing multiple issues as of late which has rocked not just the brand itself but also the Japanese auto industry as well. Just recently, the automaker was found to have falsified data on several JDM models, resulting in Toyota halting sales and shipment of the affected models. Chairman Akio Toyoda has since apologized for the safety irregularities.

Aside from that, Toyota is now recalling 102,000 vehicles in North America for potential engine failure. The safety campaign involves several 2022 & 2023 model years of the Toyota Tundra and the Lexus LX that are equipped with the 3.4-liter (or 3.5-liter in other markets) twin-turbo V6 dubbed the V35A.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), vehicles that are part of the recall have engine machining debris that might not have been removed during the production process. Should the debris adhere to the main bearings of the crankshaft and the engine continue to operate at higher loads over time, there's a high possibility the main bearings can fail.

Failure of the main bearings can result in engine knock, rough running, inability of the engine to start, and even loss of power which can result in a greater risk of an accident for owners. The twin-turbo hybrid V6, however, is not affected by the said recall, meaning only the regular twin-turbo versions are the only ones affected.

While the recall appears to be only affecting North America, we won't be surprised if other global markets are also affected by it. For now, Toyota Motor Philippines has yet to make any announcements although we did reach out to one of our contacts to get a statement.
