After naming their new Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) as the Mirai, Toyota recently released some details about the technology they used in building their latest FCV.

All of the car's mechanical components are installed on the car's floor pan, giving the car a stable ride and a low center of gravity. It also has a rigid body construction which according to Toyota, gives the Mirai a torsional rigidity of 1.58, making the car more stable compared to other Toyota sedans that only have a 0.99 stability rating.

Aboard the cabin, one can see the array of monitors and controls placed at the center console. Above the infotainment and climate control system with capacitative touch switches are two 4.2-inch TFT monitors that display the car's performance data which include the current speed, mileage, fuel gauge and current gear.

Since its powertrain components are smaller compared to normal cars, it has ample interior space and its trunk compartment can hold 361 liters of luggage. Other interior features present in the Mirai include a sound proof body and acoustic glass all around.

The Fuel Cell System of the Toyota Mirai

Providing power to the Mirai is a fuel cell system that mixes oxygen and hydrogen to create electricity. The system is able to produce 155 PS and only emits water. As the car is able to store and regenerate energy during low speeds, the only thing needed to be refilled is the hydrogen tank which according to Toyota, takes about 3 minutes to be filled up. The car also has an improved cold start capability, allowing the car to start and operate in extreme cold weather, up to -22 degrees Celsius and has a maximum range of 482.8 km.
