The use of hybrid vehicles has, without a doubt, helped reduce our reliance on fossil fuel while also assisting greatly in the reduction of tailpipe emissions and Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) has had a big impact on this development throughout the years.
TMC has just announced that the company’s cumulative sales of hybrid vehicles globally has reached 9.014 million units as of April 30, 2016, accumulating the last million only in the last nine months.
By adding more variety into the company’s hybrid offerings – selling the minivan Sienta and the fourth generation of the ‘hybrid icon’ Prius in the United States, the Corolla and the Levin in China while also launching the RAV4 hybrid trim – Toyota has expanded their lineup to 33 hybrid passenger car models and one plug-in hybrid (PHV) sold in more than 90 countries and regions.
Pushing the envelope even further, TMC has announced the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050 that targets the reduction, even elimination, of the negative impact of automobiles on environmental health.
Part of the plan to achieve this is by targeting annual hybrid sales of 1.5 million units all the way to 15 million units by 2020.
By TMC’s estimates, the 9.014 million Toyota hybrid vehicles out there has helped lessen CO2 emission by approximately 67 million tons while also saving 25 million kiloliters of gasoline.
TMC’s first hybrid vehicle was the Coaster Hybrid EV launched in August 1997, a full three months before the very first Prius was launched.
