Toyota Motor Corporation and Suzuki Motor Corporation recently announced of signing an agreement to expand their business partnership in areas such as environment, safety, and information technology fields.
“As the environment which surrounds the automobile industry has been changing drastically, we need to have the ability to respond to changes in order to survive. In addition to the R&D which each company is working on individually, it is very important now to have partners who share the same goal and passion. We would like to always keep our doors open for new partnership opportunities, which will contribute to the making of ever-better cars as well as to the development of the automotive industry,” said Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota.
Apart from the R&D conducted by individual companies, it is also important to work together with other companies on areas such as the infrastructure development and establishment of new industrial standards.
Suzuki's main focus are mini vehicles. To develop them, the company has been constantly improving their technologies. However, despite their efforts, with the rapid advancement in technology, the future technology remains unclear and they are left uncertain.
Meanwhile, Toyota has been working on R&D in the environment, safety, and information technology fields. However, the company is also aware of the fact that they may possibly be left behind by their competitors in North America and Europe in terms of establishment of standardizations and partnership with other companies.
“I am appreciative that Suzuki is able to start discussions with Toyota to explore ideas on a partnership. I first spoke about this possibility with Toyota’s Honorary Chairman Shoichiro Toyoda, and am very grateful that President Akio Toyoda has also showed an interest. We will proceed with discussions for the future of Suzuki,” said Osamu Suzuki, Chairman of Suzuki.
With these,Toyota and Suzuki agreed on exploring any opportunities for collaboration with the aim to provide solution for their respective challenges. This discussion is also based on the prerequisite that both companies continue to compete with each other in a fair and independent manner.
Apart from these, both companies said that they also open for a collaboration idea with other companies that aim for the standardization in the auto industry.
Currently, Suzuki is the leading car manufacturer in India via Maruti Suzuki. Toyota is very likely looking at possibly expanding their partnership to strengthen their presence in India through a future joint venture as well.
