Having released this sketch, Toyota follows by saying they “will use experience gained from (our) full-blooded return to the World Rally Championship to develop and improve its road car technology, and expand the Yaris range with a new performance-focused model.”

The hot hatch in question will likely bear the ‘Gazoo’ name, Toyota having previously announced that all their performance models will bear the name of their factory race team.

While we have no details apart from this sketch, it looks as if the Yaris Gazoo will be powered by a 1.6L turbocharged four cylinder much like that of the Yaris WRC it will be based from. We can hardly expect power to go above 200PS, but this puts the Toyota hot hatch squarely against the likes of the Ford Fiesta ST and Peugeot 208 GTi.

Judging from the sketch the Yaris Gazoo appears to be low and wide, with wider arches and big wheels making up for most of its girth. There’s a hint of front splitters, skirts, and rear diffusers as well to add contrast, while there’s a prominent wing perched on top of the hatch.

No dates have been indicated for the Yaris’ release, but for now we at least know that development is well underway for Toyota’s new high-performance hatch.
