Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A, Toyota Motor Corporation's subsidiary in the U.S., has just revealed their next green car with the unveiling of the RAV4 EV.
The RAV4 EV was developed in cooperation with Tesla Motors, a company that specializes and produces electric vehicles like the Tesla Roadster. With the Tesla electric powertrain, the Toyota RAV4 EV is touted as achieving up to 160 kilometers (100 miles) on one full charge (6 hours), and is scheduled for launch in the next few months.
The project began when Tesla and Toyota reached an agreement to work together in developing electric vehicles (EV) and components, production systems and engineering. Tesla and TMC soon started joint vehicle development, leading to the unveiling of a concept vehicle at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November 2010.
TMC began sales of a Prius-based plug-in hybrid vehicle in Japan and the U.S. in early 2012, with a European launch scheduled this summer. An all-electric vehicle based on the “iQ” ultra-compact is also planned for launch in Japan, North America and Europe within this year.
The RAV4 EV, to be produced in Ontario, Canada, will retail at US$49,800, and the company plans on selling 2600 units over a 3 year period.
