Toyota has just announced plans to start using aluminum to reduce the overall weight of vehicles according to a report. They will replace only the hood for starters with aluminum and the first model to get the treatment will be Camry by 2018.
But before aluminum touches any Toyota model, the automaker will first lay it on their premium line Lexus with the RX350 getting an aluminum hood and tailgate by 2016.
The move is supposedly part of the thrust by Toyota to continue to look for ways to cut the weight of vehicles and improve fuel economy.
"Toyota has plans to use aluminum on future vehicles for hood, closures and parts for lightweighting. Also, we will increase usage of mix metals and resin materials to enhance lightweighting efforts," said Toyota spokeswoman Jana Hartline.
The aluminum sheets will come from a joint venture between Toyota Tsusho Corp., and Kobe Steel.
