One of the major obstacles of an autonomous automobile environment, aside from all of the basic safety issues at hand, is the online ecosystem that needs to be in place in order to handle the enormous amount of data that ‘smart’ vehicles will be uploading and downloading at the same time, in real time.
Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) already has an inkling of what the information technology demands will be like and has already taken steps to get address the situation.
TMC along with Denso Corporation, Ericsson, Intel Corporation, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT), NTT DOCOMO, INC., Toyota InfoTechnology Center Co., Ltd. have just announced that they will initiate the formation of the world’s first Automotive Edge Computing Consortium with the aim of developing a network to handle the all information to and from connected cars like intelligent driving, the creation of maps with real-time data and driving assistance based on cloud computing.
Current approximations indicate that data between automated automobiles sent online will be close to 10 exabytes (1 billion gigabytes) per month by 2025, which is 10,000 times more than the current amount of data sent.
According to TMC, a totally new form of architecture will be required ‘to support distributed resources and topology-aware storage capacity’ and that it should be ‘compliant with applicable standards, which requires collaboration on a local and global scale.’
This new partnership seeks to determine the requirements and develop case studies for emerging mobile devices while focusing on the specific needs of the automotive industry while also designing a more efficient network to increase capacity between vehicles and the cloud.
Moving forward, other global tech leaders will be invited in order to further growth and knowledge of the consortium.
