After the recent expansion of the Takata airbag recall to 35-40 million vehicles, Toyota USA recently announced that they will be recalling an additional 1,584,000 units that carry the dreaded airbag inflator.

Affected models that are part of safety campaign are 2006 – 2011 model years from Toyota, Lexus and Scion. Moreover, the automaker stated that only the passenger airbag inflator will have to be replaced (free of charge) as this has the ammonium nitrate propellant that causes the inflator to rupture.

Vehicles affected in the new safety recall include:

  • 2009 – 2011 Corolla, Matrix

  • 2006 – 2011 Yaris

  • 2010 – 2011 4Runner

  • 2011 Senna

  • 2008 – 2011 Scion xB

  • 2007 – 2011 Lexus ES

  • 2010 – 2011 Lexus GS

  • 2006 – 2011 Lexus IS

Affected owners will be notified by first class mail. Depending on the model, dealers will either have to replace the air bag inflator or the air bag assembly.

Last November 2015 Toyota dropped Takata as their airbag supplier over safety concerns. Toyota Motor President, Akio Toyoda, stressed that their decision to drop Takata is to provide peace of mind to their customers.
