Certain Toyota and Lexus SUVs sold in the US are being recalled due to a defective airbag control module that may set off the side curtain airbags by accident after start up.
A total of 320,000 vehicles are affected and consist of the 2003-2006 Land Cruiser, 2004-2006 4Runner, 2005-2006 Tundra and Sequoia, 2003-2006 LX470, and 2004-2006 GX470 models.
All affected vehicles are fitted with side Curtain-Shield Airbags (CSAs) that deploy from the roof in an event of a crash. Due to improper programming of the airbag control modules, there is a possibility that the CSAs may unexpectedly deploy after start up. In addition, the seatbelt pretensioners may also activate.
Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the airbag control module with a new unit at no extra cost. Affected owners will be notified by first class mail.
