Sporty isn't exactly the first word that comes to mind when describing the Toyota Vios. Yes there are race cars but the road-going versions are rather pedestrian. It doesn't help that there are thousands of Vioses plying the streets either.
So, to give the popular sedan a bit more flair, it seems that Toyota is preparing a GR version of the Vios. But before we dive deeper into that prospect, don't get your hopes too high. Don't expect it to have the 272 PS engine from the GR Yaris. Instead, the Vios might be a GR Sport variant, which is a largely cosmetic upgrade instead of a performance model.
Photos of a camouflaged Vios recently floated online, covering up the front, side skirts, and rear bumper. While it could have been any Vios, the most telling clue is seen inside with the GR logo imprinted on the headrests. There are other noteworthy things we noticed about the spied car.
The lower half of the bumper reveals a honeycomb pattern on the intake, taking some cues from the GR Yaris. Also, the wheels seem to be lifted straight from the TRD catalog with a gloss black multi-spoke design and are wearing Toyo tires. It also has gloss black side mirrors, which is also a nod to Toyota's high-performance hatchback.
While we're not expecting more power out of it, the Vios GR Sport could get tweaks under the chassis. Toyota might do the same things they did with the Corolla Altis GR Sport. That means the Vios might come with stiffer dampers and thicker anti-roll bars at the front and rear.
So far, Toyota isn't posting any teasers hinting at the sportier Vios. It might take some time before the final product is revealed, possibly shown sometime in 2021.
