Nissan North America's stake in the C-segment gets a turbo upgrade after the automaker revealed the 2017 Sentra SR Turbo at this year's Miami International Auto Show. With it, the new turbocharged four-door gets more power under the hood along with an array of extra exterior and interior equipment.
As mentioned, the 2017 Sentra SR is now powered by a 1.6-liter Direct Injection Gasoline (DIG) turbo inline-four. The engine produces 190 PS along with 240 Nm of torque. This results in a 50-percent increase in power compared to the standard SR which only gets a 132 PS, 174 Nm with its 1.8-liter naturally aspirated mill. Available transmission options include a new 6-speed manual and the brand's Xtronic continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The bump in power also meant that Nissan had to boost the car's handling as well. To do that, the automaker gave the 2017 Sentra SR Turbo a more rigid body, tweaked steering system, bigger front disc brakes and uprated suspension.
As for its exterior, the Sentra SR Turbo still shares its overall design with the 2016 update. However, the turbocharged model does get several extras like SR Turbo badging, projector headlights with LED daytime running lights (DRLs), trunk spoiler, chrome exhaust pipe and the 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels wrapped in 205/50/R17 tires.
On the other hand, new cabin amenities that have been installed on the new Sentra SR Turbo are: power sliding glassroof, sporty cloth seats and interior trim, 5-inch Advanced Drive-Assist Display (ADAD) and Siri Eyes Free recognition.
"The Sentra SR Turbo is designed for buyers who want all the attributes of traditional compact sedans but also desire some serious turbo performance," The SR Turbo builds upon the redesigned Sentra and adds 50 percent more horsepower and more than 40 percent more torque, as well as the upgrades where drivers will feel them. It's truly the complete package for compact car buyers and enthusiasts alike,” said Michael Bunce, vice president of product planning at Nissan North America, Inc.
The 2017 Sentra SR Turbo will arrive at US dealerships later this Fall.
