The KD series of engines may soon be consigned to the history books as Toyota is set to replace it with the GD series of turbo diesels. Described by the company to deliver more power while consuming less fuel, both the 2.8-liter and 2.4-liter engines have better thermal efficiency, reduced noise and smaller components than the outgoing KD series.
With an exact displacement of 2,754cc, the 1GD-FTV is smaller than the 3.0-liter KD engine but delivers 25% more torque and has a 15% increase in fuel economy. It has a maximum output of 177 PS at 3,400 rpm along with a torque pull of 450 Nm available between 1,600 – 2,400 rpms.
A key feature on the 2.8-liter engine is the world's-first application of Thermo Swing Wall Insulation Technology. In a nutshell, the special type of insulation allows the engine to have 44% thermal efficiency. In addition, the pistons are coated with SiRPA (silica-reinforced porous, anodized aluminum coating) which reduces cooling loss during combustion by about 30%.
The smaller 2,393cc 2GD-FTV is also smaller than the outgoing 2.5-liter KD unit but is more powerful as well since it is rated at 150 PS at 1,200 rpm and 330 Nm of torque between 1,600 – 2,400 rpms.
Both engines benefit from a new turbocharger that is 30% smaller and features a new turbine and impeller that will provide instant throttle response and maximum torque over a wide rev range according to Toyota.
Other technical features present in the new GD engines include: new catalyst that eliminates up to 99% of Nitrogen oxide emissions, reshaped air intake to increase airflow to the cylinders, optimized injection and a smaller exhaust layout.
Toyota aims to reach production of the new GD engines by up to 700,000 units per year in 2016 and will make it available to 90 world markets.
The 2.8-liter turbo diesel will debut in the upcoming 2016 Hilux and the current Land Cruiser Prado.
