The Chevrolet Colorado made its US debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show for the North American midsize truck market. It is equipped with modern Chevrolet styling, forward collision alert and lane departure warning. The US-market release is distinctly different from the International version which is currently being sold in the locally.
The Colorado will be initially available with direct injection and variable valve timing gasoline-fed engines when the truck goes on sale in late 2014 as a 2015 model, a 2.5-liter inline-4 (199 PS and 253 Nm) and a 3.6-liter V6 (305 PS and 366 Nm). The 2.8-liter Duramax inline-4 turbo currently fitted in the ASEAN versions will follow in 2016. All engines will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with auto grade braking and a tow/haul mode. A G80 automatic locking rear differential is standard on the Z71 and optional for other variants.
Steering duties are handled by an electric assist steering system with a turning radius of 12.5 meters. It will be fitted with four piston front calipers and DuraLife disc brakes on all four wheels for maximum stopping power and durability.
The exterior design for the North American version features a more confident and athletic look, while the taller truck bed gives a tougher look while offering more storage space and security to items stored. The Colorado will be offered with three configurations, an extended cab with a 6-foot bed, a crew cab with 5-foot bed and a crew cab with 6-foot bed. The off-road inspired Z71 variant features a gunmetal grill, projector headlamps and 17-inch wheels.
An aluminum hood is fitted to improve front-to rear weight balance, while active aero grill shutters close at highway speeds for enhanced aerodynamics. The doors feature triple-seals to improve aerodynamics and reduce exterior noise. The rear bumper features a ‘CornerStep’ for easy access to the bed, and a two-tier loading platform allows the bed to be split into upper and lower sections.
The interior is likewise significantly different from the International version as it is patterned more after the Silverado having a more North American truck feel compared to a more stylish look that appeals more to European and ASEAN markets. A 3.4-inch diagonal multi-information meter is integrated to the instrument cluster. In true North American living large fashion, it does feature a large glove box and center console with enough room for a tablet and rear under-seat storage.
For safety, it will be equipped with six airbags, StabiliTrak traction control with rollover mitigation, and trailer sway control. The Z71 gets additional hill descent control and hill assist. Forward collision alert, and lane departure warning are optional.
For entertainment, the LT and Z71 variants feature an eight-inch touch screen with support for multiple USB drives and a host of optional connectivity features like OnStar and MyLink.
