Last June, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) opened the new Kalayaan Bridge. While it provides an alternate route for motorists heading to Pasig or Makati, the viaduct section connecting Kalayaan Bridge to 8th Avenue in Bonifacio Global City has yet to be completed.
The DPWH said they plan to finish work on the Lawton Avenue to Global City Viaduct section this September, provided all goes according to plan. Given the ongoing pandemic, it's understandable the DPWH was not certain whether it will be completed on time.
Fast forward to now, and the DPWH has confirmed that the viaduct section will indeed be finished next month.
According to DPWH Secretary Mark Villar, he said that construction of the viaduct and approach along BGC's 8th Avenue is now at an accelerated pace. This was done to meet the September completion deadline.
Despite Metro Manila still under ECQ, Persan Construction Inc., the contractor assigned to the project, has continued work along the stretch of 8th Avenue from the Kalayaan Avenue intersection.
According to Emil K. Sadain, Undersecretary for Unified Project Management Office Operations (UPMO), they have already finished work on the deck slab of the main viaduct. They are currently installing deck slab reinforcements as well as working on the sidewalks and median of the viaduct.
Once the Lawton Avenue to Global City Viaduct section is complete, it will provide direct access from Ortigas Center heading towards the Kalayaan Bridge to Bonifacio Global City.
With all hands on deck on the upcoming viaduct, we hope that the DPWH will be able to finish it by next month or even ahead of schedule.
