The Volvo Concept XC Coupe was revealed after an online leak surfaced. The new concept is two of three cars the Swedish carmaker will reveal as part of its new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which will be the foundation for their future vehicles.
“The Volvo Concept XC Coupé is perfectly in tune with this active lifestyle. Its capability and protection is cleverly integrated into the sophisticated looks. Concept XC Coupé is ready and willing to bring you into the adventure zone and back,” says Thomas Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Car Group.
The two-door, four-seater Concept XC Coupé features similar headlights with T-shaped DRL (daytime-running light) as with the Volvo Concept Coupé. The larger 21-inch wheels, larger wheel-arches and the taller roofline sets it apart as an outdoor activity vehicle, however. The rear light signature is also a distinctive element in the new design direction of Volvo Cars.
The design team has also taken inspiration from Swedish extreme sports safety gear maker POC to add matte rubber moldings and orange details to the skidplates, wheels, and interior giving the Concept XC Coupé a rugged yet safe feel.
“With the Volvo Concept XC Coupé, we take this unique blend of capable ruggedness and expressive elegance up to a new, sportier attitude,” says Ingenlath.
In terms of engineering, the concept applies the extensive use of high-strength boron steel and structures with new, ingenious decoupling to make SPA cars lighter and more compact without compromising safety.
The extended distance between the dashboard and the front axle is still a very powerful visual element. The capable stance is emphasized by details such as the new bonnet and a beltline that spans an elegant bow along the length of the car.
Details as to its actual dimensions as well as powertrain and suspension configuration will most likely have to wait until the actual reveal at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next week. The concept is expected preview the upcoming next-gen XC90 which will debut this year as well as a glimpse into future XC models. Former Swedish House Mafia member Steve Angello makes yet another appearance in the newly released photos to which we suspect will make his appearance at the launch after 'leaving the world behind'.
